Home building faces Productivity Commission probe

Inquiry to examine Australia's housing affordability challenges

Productivity Commission to investigate barriers to home building

The Productivity Commission will launch an inquiry into the challenges facing Australia's residential construction sector, with a focus on affordable rental housing.

The Commission's findings are expected to shed light on the factors contributing to Australia's housing affordability crisis, including land use planning, taxation, and construction costs.

The inquiry will also examine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the residential construction sector.

"The Productivity Commission is an independent body that provides evidence-based advice to the Government on economic, social, and environmental issues," said Productivity Commission Chairman Michael Brennan.

"This inquiry will provide important insights into the challenges facing the residential construction sector and help to inform policy decisions to improve housing affordability in Australia."

The Productivity Commission's report is due to be released in 2023.
