Evan Gershkovich, Wrongly Convicted Wall Street Journal Reporter, Released by Russia
Russian authorities have freed Evan Gershkovich, a Wall Street Journal reporter who was wrongly convicted of espionage.
Gershkovich was detained in Russia in 2003 while on a reporting trip and was sentenced to 16 years in prison. He was released on Friday, August 18, 2023, after more than a year of imprisonment.
The Wall Street Journal has been campaigning for Gershkovich's release since his arrest. The newspaper has published numerous articles about his case and has called on the Russian government to drop the charges against him.
Gershkovich's release is a victory for freedom of the press. It shows that even in repressive regimes, journalists can speak out against injustice and hold those in power accountable.
