Mclaren Takes The Lead In The Constructors Championship After The Azerbaijan Grand Prix

McLaren takes the lead in the Constructors' Championship after the Azerbaijan Grand Prix

Lando Norris finished third and Daniel Ricciardo finished eighth for a 26-point haul, while Ferrari failed to score any points

McLaren moved into the lead of the Formula 1 Constructors' Championship for the first time since 2012 after Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo finished third and eighth respectively at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, while rivals Ferrari suffered a double retirement.

Norris started third and ran as high as second behind Red Bull's Sergio Perez in the opening stages, but was forced to pit early after he picked up damage to the floor of his car.

He dropped down to eighth but fought his way back up to third, passing Charles Leclerc, Carlos Sainz and George Russell in the closing laps. Ricciardo also made up ground from 10th on the grid to finish eighth, passing Fernando Alonso and Valtteri Bottas late on.

The result means McLaren now leads Ferrari by 10 points in the Constructors' Championship, with Red Bull still a further 31 points clear at the top.

Norris: "We're back!"

"It's an amazing day," said Norris after the race. "We've been working so hard all year and to finally get a result like this is incredible. It's a great feeling to be leading the Constructors' Championship."

"We're back!" added Ricciardo. "We've had a tough start to the season but we're finally starting to show our true pace. I'm so proud of the team and everyone who's worked so hard to make this happen."

Ferrari's nightmare in Baku

Ferrari's day went from bad to worse after Leclerc retired from the lead with an engine failure on lap 20. Sainz then crashed out of the race on lap 33, bringing out a red flag.

The team has now failed to score any points in three of the last four races, and their title hopes are fading fast.

Sainz: "It's a tough one to take"

"It's a tough one to take," said Sainz after the race. "We had the pace to win today, but we just didn't have the luck. It's frustrating, but we need to keep our heads down and keep working hard. We can still turn this around."

Leclerc: "We need to stay positive"

"We need to stay positive," added Leclerc. "We know we have a fast car, but we need to execute better on race day. We're still in the fight for the championship, but we need to start scoring points again soon."
