Oakland Athletics Sign Lawrence Butler to One-Year Contract
Details of the Deal
Salary and Contract Terms
The Oakland Athletics have signed first baseman Lawrence Butler to a one-year contract worth $285,000. The contract includes a guaranteed salary of $285,000 and no bonuses or incentives.
Roster Moves
To make room for Butler on the 40-man roster, the Athletics have optioned first baseman Seth Brown to Triple-A Las Vegas. Butler will wear jersey number 77 for Oakland.
Butler's Career
Butler was drafted by the Athletics in the sixth round of the 2018 MLB June Amateur Draft out of Westlake High School in Thousand Oaks, California. He has spent the past four seasons in the Athletics' minor league system, primarily playing first base and designated hitter. In 2022, Butler batted .291 with 22 home runs and 90 RBIs in 132 games for Triple-A Las Vegas. He was named to the Pacific Coast League All-Star team and was a finalist for the league's MVP award. Butler is expected to compete for a starting role at first base for the Athletics in 2023. He brings a strong bat to the lineup and has shown good power and on-base skills in the minors. The Athletics hope that Butler can provide a consistent presence in the middle of their batting order and help the team improve on its disappointing 2022 season.
