A Day of Recognition and Celebration
On August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day. This annual event, traditionally held on the third Saturday in May, honors all of the U.S. Armed Forces, including the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Space Force, Coast Guard, National Guard, and Reserve Forces.
Armed Forces Day is a time to recognize and celebrate the brave men and women who serve our country. These individuals have dedicated their lives to protecting our freedoms and ensuring our national security. They have sacrificed countless hours away from their families and friends, and have risked their lives in defense of our nation. On Armed Forces Day, we take the opportunity to thank them for their service and to express our gratitude for their sacrifices.
This year, Armed Forces Day will be observed on Saturday, May 20th. There will be a variety of events and activities held across the country to honor our military members. These events will include parades, ceremonies, and open houses. Many businesses and organizations will also offer discounts or special promotions to military members and their families.
If you know a military member, take the time to thank them for their service on Armed Forces Day. Let them know that their sacrifice is appreciated and that we are grateful for their dedication to our country.
