Liberty Rewards Fourth-Year Coach with Fully Guaranteed Deal
Liberty Extends Hugh Freeze's Contract
Long-Term Commitment for High-Performing Coach
Lynchburg, VA - Liberty University has rewarded its fourth-year head football coach, Hugh Freeze, with a fully guaranteed eight-year contract that will keep him at the helm of the Flames football program through the 2030 season, the university announced on Friday.
The new deal places Freeze among the highest-paid coaches in the Group of Five conferences. According to ESPN's Pete Thamel, Freeze's contract details include an annual salary of $6.5 million on average. This amount exceeds the six-year, $65 million contract Freeze previously held with Auburn University.
"Hugh Freeze has consistently exceeded expectations both on and off the field," said Liberty President Jerry Prevo. "His leadership, commitment to student-athletes, and ability to build a winning program make him an invaluable asset to our university. We are thrilled to have him lead our football team for many years to come."
Since taking over as head coach in 2019, Freeze has transformed Liberty's football program. Under his guidance, the team has achieved three consecutive bowl appearances, including a program-record 10 wins in the 2022 season. Freeze has also guided the Flames to a 29-15 overall record, including a 13-1 mark in the past two seasons.
